Tally McGough has conflicting Confederate CMSR's He was captured at Stones River in the last days of December 1862 and was taken to Camp Douglas in Chicago. Federal POW records state that he died at Camp Douglas on April 27, 1863. However they also say he was paroled and exchanged at City Point, Virginia in May of 1863. His next mention is having his horse killed on September 19, 1863 at Chickamauga, Georgia and he was paid $60.00 for his loss and signed his name as Talley McGough. His very last mention in his Confederate CMSR's is mentioned on a receipt for clothing on June 30, 1864.

The census of 1860 reports him as age 24 and living in Chattahoochee County, Georgia. It does not mention anything about his wife or children.

The census of 1870 reports him living in Chattahoochee County, Georgia with his wife Elizabeth and their family and reported his birth year as 1835 and list his name as Tally McGough. Their oldest son was reported as John A. McGough who was age 13

Genealogy records however list him as living in Dooly County, Georgia the 1900 census and list his birth as January 1830 and do mention him being born in Georgia and his parents as from Virginia and report his name as Tally McGough.

I agree with George that after June 30, 1864 there is no further mention of his Confederate service. Perhaps his pension records if he has any may be of some help. He does appear to have fallen within the realm of the Confederate Conscription Act of 1862 by looking at his enlistment date. He had a second child born in 1861 so by the time of Chickamauga he would have had two children and a wife and living in Northern Georgia assuming that he was married in 1860.
