Re: foreign-born soldiers in 9th Georgia?

While no surprise, the seaport towns in the South appear to have enrolled a high percentage of foreign born soldiers. I mention it only because their inclusion tends to skew the results. Likewise, immigrants in great numbers populated the cities of the North. A marked drop off occurred in the interior of both regions, but apparently more so in the South, due to competition from free (slave) labor. Three of the Louisiana infantry regiments at Gettysburg averaged 26.3, 30.2 and 38.6 percent foreign-born members based on my calculations - roughly one out of every three soldiers. Several units from the interior, on the other hand, show only about one to three percent foreign composition.
