Mark, I wish I knew more on the 4th Ga. Cavalry Regiment, but what you see on this line of post is all I know about it, too. Thomas Jefferson Stephenson(Stevenson) enlisted in the 4th in Nov., 1862, Capt. James H. Graham, commanding officer in Coweta County, GA.(Newnan). Jame H. Graham was Thomas's uncle by marriage or my gr-gr-grandmother Stephenson's uncle. I suppose that is why Thomas enlisted in that particular unit(Co. H.) Thomas evidently came down with something, perhaps "camp fever" and it got the best of him. I have a copy of a published letter that he wrote on 6apr1863 from a Confederate army hospital in Chattanooga. He then died on the 12th of that month. In the letter he does not mention anything about his unit or where he was when he got sick, but I am sure all outgoing mail was censored before posting. In the letter he expressed his wish to be returned to Coweta Co. to be buried there, but that never came to pass and he was buried in Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery in downtown Chattanooga. His name is on a bronze plate that is mounted on a monument there. He had four brothers who all fought for the Southern cause and one of them, Augustus Robert Stevenson, also was captured and taken to Camp Chase. When he made his way home to East Texas, he lived only about a year, probably from the trauma of war and the long trek back home. Another brother, Joseph, a doctor, was captured on the second day of fighting at Gettysburg, then was taken to Johson's Island, Ohio, where he remained until Feb., 1865, then was released to come home. The two other brothers who served, William Andrew Jackson Stephenson and James L. Stevenson, I have little on as far as their units and where they saw action. I haven't given you much, but I don't have much on these men to share. I think that Thomas (Thomas Jefferson Stephenson--they had another brother, Benjamin Franklin Stephenson, who died before the outbreak of the war)was the only one of the brothers to enlist in the 4th Regiment. Joseph, of course, was in the medical corps. I haven't researched the other two very much. Hope you find more info on the 4th Reg. Co. A. and your gr-gr-gr-grandfather. Pat
