My 3rd great grandfather Robert Larkin Young was in the unit referred to Avery's mountain dragoons or i think 4th Ga Vol Cav and a member of Camp L.P. Thomas #1467 Norcross Ga.
Lived in Pinkneyville Ga at the time located roughly 2 miles north of Norcross Ga on old Peachtree Rd. He traveled which was a long ways even by car today to Dalton Ga to sign with Co.A 4th Regiment Georgia Cavalry. Was captured near Knoxville Tenn on Dec 3rd 1863. He was taken to Camp Chase Ohio and from there to Rock Island Barracks in Illinois. After his release he passed along all this to his children and everything was well documented. He stated it took 2 months to walk home in the cold and he lived off whatever he could find to eat.
I would love to hear from ya on any other information you might have on this unit. Take care..
