Re: 34th Georgia Menlo Park Monument - Chickamauga

Mr. Martin,

Yes. Company A, 34th Georgia was from Whitfield County; Company D, 34th Georgia from Chattooga County; and Company F, 34th Georgia, Dade County.

I reviewed the compiled service record of Tillman W. Harris and he was not captured at "Chickamauga, Georgia." Chickamauga, Georgia is a post-bellum community and not incorporated until 1891. Prior to that time it was known as Crawfish Spring.

Given the proponderance of evidence, I believe he was captured somewhere between Missionary Ridge and Chickamauga Station, Tennessee. Chickamauga Station was at what is today the Chattanooga Municipal Airport Terminal and was the supply depot for the Army of Tennessee in the fall of 1863. The Battle of Missionary Ridge was fought on November 25, 1863 and Stevenson's Division did not withdraw until well after dark. It along with Cleburne's Division was the last Confederate divisions to withdraw.

Davis appears to have gone to Chattanooga and surrendered. Why he did this I have no clue.

The Federals entered into Dade County on or about September 4, 1863. We know that the regiments of Cumming's Brigade were ordered into parole camps sometime just prior to August 24, 1863. I know that the 39th Georgia had to send officers back into the home counties to collect men due to them not reporting for duty. This also seems to be a trend among all Vicksburg regiments regardless of state.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Respectfully,
