The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: A of T Battle Flags

Hi Ben,

There is nothing that I have been able to determine for when AOT flags were made and issued over the life of the AOT in terms on construction techniques. They were made under contract from the Augusta Depot by Jacob Platt who, along with his brother Charles, were known area flag makers since 1861 as well as being prominent militia members (Charles commanding the Clinch Rifles before the war, later of the 5th Georgia Infantry). Both were used to working with cloth as businessmen so I doubt that Jacob varies his techniques at all. The color of the ties was probably due to whatever surplus cloth he had on hand as it was with some other flag makers and the orange borders for the ANV First and Second Bunting issues (leftover cloth from the failed wing badges concept).

Wish there was a smoking gun on this.
