That is the $800 question indeed and you can carry this forward from April 2nd until April 9th when the ANV lost a boat load of flags. I have never sat down and made up a list of flags taken from the battles of these dates. Howie found that the Army of the James never sent in to the War Department any flags they ever captured and this seems to have rubbed off on the Army of the Potomac at this stage. I am sure that the Union troops and officers felt that the time for the end of the war in Virginia was very close at hand and the souvenirs would soon dry up so grab what you can while you can.
