Re: Michigan capture of CS flags at New Madrid

Well, turning over an enemy battle flag whether picked up or captured was always a plus...however, the wikipedia note probably came from my research on the 11th as I know who published the info. It is from my research that as the 11th was out front when the evac was ordered held the enemy at bay while they thought their comrades of the 12th Inf were loading their baggage on the boats. That never happened, the 12th got their stuff and "run". When the men of the 11th were called in from the trenches out front it was to hurry to the boats at the last moment. Imagine their disgust when they got to Tenn shore and found out everything...(inlcuding colors) were left in Ft Thompson. The only substantiating evidence at all (which I can't document at this time) is the fact that they did leave everything, and that the Arkansas flag discussed was taken by a Michigan unit in Mo in 1862 limiting it to the 2nd or 3rd Mich Cav at Ft Thompson. One can presume since the 12th Inf got off with all their gear, their flag was with them. With the "hurricane" blowing it is doubtful the 11th took it forward in the dark of night on the 13-14th of March. But it is all speculative based on the best assumption of the known facts and info available.
