Flag Presentation in Missouri

"The Mounted Rangers of Clay co'ty, under the command of Capt. H. L. Routt having received orders to report to Jefferson City without delay, left for head quarters on Monday evening last. Preparatory to their departure they assembled in the court house to receive a handsome flag - the flag of the State of Missouri - presented to them by certain ladies of Liberty. Miss Minnie Withers, daughter of Maj. Abijah Withers, delivered the presentation speech, which was artless (?), eloquent and appropriate. Lieut. John W. Gillespie responded in a few spirited and pertinent remarks. The interesting ceremony was witnessed by a large number of our citizens."

Liberty (MO) Tribune, May 24, 1861.

The state of Missouri had no official flag at the time of this presentation, but in times past the state's military units often carried a flag with the state coat of arms on it. This is likely the type of flag presented to Capt. Routt's company.
