Tillinghast, Private, 36th Alabama Infantry, wounded in face, sent to hospital at West Point from hospital at Okolona, Miss. ca Jan. 1863, appointed Ensign & 1st Lieutenant April 28, 1864, admitted Floyd House & Ocmulgee Hospital, Macon, Ga. August 9, 1864, gunshot wound, left thigh, flesh, returned to duty October 31, resident of Bibb County, paroled at Meridian, Miss. May 10, 1865

I have the honor to name Private Joseph W. Tillinghast of Co. B as a suitable Person to recommend as Ensign.
Private Tillinghast is a young man of good character, temperate, intelligent, and in good health.
He has carried the Colors of this Regt. in every Battle in which it was Engaged Continualy Marching in His place, a cool ????? man Who merited the Especial Mention of his name made in my report of the Battle of Chickamauga.**

** "Color Bearer J. W. Tillinghast, of Company B, carried the colors both days, and always full to the front. In the charge on Sunday he was foremost with his flag, and only retired when most of the command had turned back. He is a cool, brave man, and deserves special mention."
