Ken, I was as amazed as you obviously are. Apparently the flag was sewn to a backing material where the obverse can't be seen. I've never seen such conservation methods. The flag was in rough shape. I've seen and handled it personally before "conservation", less than a year ago. The flag was/is in rough shape. Maybe Greg can shed some insight on this. My friend Jay Phillips, that is the the descendant of Walter Callis, brought this flag out last year in hopes of selling it. He was in dire conditions financially as were his sisters. I hooked him up with Greg, who I think hooked him up with the guy in Maine. He had tried to sell the flag to a local guy in Virginia, I won't drop names or attempt to tarnish reputations, that refuted the source of the flag. I know Jay's ancestry, and I know the flag has been in his family since 1865. I turn to scholars like you to help with the facts. By all measurements it is a fifth bunting issue ANV flag. Greg apparently agrees. I don't have a dog in this hunt. So I am only trying to share what info I know. If you have questions for me, you can contact me @ 804-seven three one-5034 most anytime. When you try to help someone out, sometimes you become the enemy. That is not my intention here. I am a student at your school. With ALL due respect.
