3 Mississippi Infatry (Pass Christian Flag?)

While transcribing diary entries from a man that served with my GGG Grandfather in the 30th Massachusetts Infantry this evening I came across an account of a flag that was captured on April 4th 1862 (another source says April 2nd, though I think the 4th is the correct date). The flag was captured by the 9th Conn. Infantry (which according to some officers was on detached duty near Biloxi for a couple of days. There is a small article that alludes to this capture at http://cheshire.patch.com/articles/looking-back-connecticut-volunteers-capture-flag This article and others show that the flag was captured from the 3rd Mississippi Infantry, though another source ( http://history.passchristian.net/pass_flag.htm ) refers to this as "misrepresented as a captured Confederate 'Battle Flag'." and instead calls it the "Pass Christian Flag".

I'm sure someone here knows a bit more about this flag, but whatever the history (military or not), I thought you all might like to see the description about the flag as it was recorded in the diary of Corpl. B.B. Smith, Co. A 30th Mass Infantry.

"...the troops
Have returned back from the other
With some prisoners and a flag
It was a white body with a
A Blue Corner and a purple border
With a cotton plant in the
Center. one star in the Blue Corner."
