US Flag Star Pattern

Have a question about the US Flag, just as the CW broke out. There is reference to a Company Flag (Co H, 33rd Wisconsin) that the Company Flag only contained stars for those states that remained loyal to the US. The stars are also 6-pointed stars. The company was formed in mid-1862, with the Regiment formed in October 1862.

At the beginning of the war there were 34 states. Assuming that they removed 11 stars, for those states that seceded (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee), this would result in only 23 stars being in/on the flag.

What might the pattern of these stars be? Linear lines, circular, other? Sewer’s choice?

Thanks for any direction that can be provided.
