Re: 14th Louisiana Infantry Regiment Flag Recovere

W. P. Snakenberg of the 14th Louisiana writes in his memoir about the flag at Gettysburg: "We lost our regimental colors there and did not get them back until in the winter [late 1863]. Our color bearer was cut off from us in the fall back [from Culp's Hill], and seeing that he was a prisoner, tore the flag from the staff and hid it. It was dark when we made the charge. After night the color bearer folded the flag around his body and wore it under his clothes until he was exchanged and brought it back to us, after we had gone into winter quarters.
