The Virginia flag in question reportedly came out of the "Custer Collection" that was later returned. Unlike others that were captured and actually turned in per orders... thus more probable to have some details as to place of capture. This one was initially taken and kept. Details of where it was or could have been taken is sparce and sketchy, mostly speculation at best. Anywhere along the Appomattox campaign could be feasible. On a side note Its seal design features is moreso of a pattern design that was popular in the pre-war 1850's era. Rather than what was commonly seen, made, or used during the 1860's war time era... Could have been someones headquarters flag also.. it isnt very large as one would normally expect for a field use flag..

If memory serves correctly; Wises Brigade was engaged at Marshalls Crossroad as one of three segments of the Saylors Creek battle. Only regiment within that is immediately identified and listed to have lost a flag was the 26th Va, at Saylors Creek... but didnt indicate what segment of the battle it was taken. I have not found any surviving identified flags of any of the other regiments of Wises out there. So anything is possible...
