Union Flags Captured at New Creek

There is an account in the Lynchburg Daily Republican , 11 December 1864, describing the arrival in Richmond of Capt. Thaddeus Fitzhugh, 5th Va. Cavalry. Fitzhugh was bringing with him the flags captured by the 5th and 6th Va. Cav at New Creek, W.Va., on 28 November 1864. First mentioned were the large silk regimental flags of the 5th and 6th (Union) W.Va. These flags were described as being "of heavy silk beautifully made, with the names of a dozen battles painted on them." The 5th Va. Confdederate captured the flag of the 5th W.Va. Union and the 6th Va. Confederate captured the flag of the 6th W.Va. Union. Also captured was a large garrison flag that has flown over the fort at New Creek and a number of flags belonging to squadrons and companies.
