Captured flags near Falling Waters July 1863

Letters from Dr. John James Hervey Love, a surgeon attached to the 13th New Jersey Regiment, can be found at the New Jersey Historical Society in Newark, NJ. In a letter dated 15 July 1863 he writes of Lee's retreat after Gettysburg, "The last of the rebs crossed the Potomac at Falling Waters on a bridge yesterday morning. At 9 o'clock a.m. we captured 2000 prisoners, 2 cannon, 3 standards, one of them I have just had in my hands. It has the names of 12 battles on it ..." In another letter dated 31 July, Love expands on this account and changes the number of colors that were taken: "I happened to witness that most memorable cavalry fight and with my own eyes saw the cavalry charge drive the rebel skirmishers through a piece of woods, up a hill, and charge right over a low breastwork in which the enemy had two pieces of artillery ... in less than half an hour, Kilpatrick came back to where I stood with the two guns, 2000 prisoners, 4 standards following him, all captured in that charge ..."
