Re: Flag Taken by the 41st Virginia

I remember I read a book on the Crater and indeed he was killed and the guidon was captured with him. I feel more USCT regiments lost flags that I have not found yet, among the Six unknown flags. I (Believe) the 30th USCT lost a flag, but no proof yet, but I am keeping eyes and ears out on that regiment.

I am currently going through the captured Illinois flags. Several years ago I worked with John Schmale and his Illinois website is excellent. He would know one half of the story and I would know the other half. Reading on every single Illinois regiment he has listed from the 7th to the 156th. I have found that he admits to (17) Illinois regiments losing a flag or flags on his site. There are many that I know were captured not listed on his site, so I will put everything together and see how many I have total. I am going to do a state-to-state search. I first did Pennsylvania, recorded as many as I could find and now moving on to Illinois.

Now these Illinois regiments either were three month, 100 days or did not seeing any fighting.

67-68-69-70-71 (3 month regiments in emergency for protection on/at Washington City) No flags lost/captured. All Illinois regiments from the 132nd-156 were mostly 100 day regiments a few were one year regiments. Doubtful any of those regiments lost flags considering many were not issued flags.

Have a good morning!
