Re: Union Flag Captured at Vicksburg, May 22, 1863

Looks like the 99th Illinois Flag, that was captured on May 22nd, 1863 at Vicksburg. Color-Bearer, Thomas H. Higgen's continued on with the flag, while the regiment fell back. Around 100 Confederates aimed at Higgin's and fired, but not a shot hit him. He was later waved into the defensive works and was actually applauded by the Confederates who witnessed his bravery. The 2nd Texas Infantry was in that area and may have captured the flag.

Also the 77th Illinois lost colors on May 22nd, 1863 at Vicksburg, National Flag and Regimental. Bentley, in his history of the Seventy-seventh details the presentation of a set of colors to the Regiment in September 1863. “It will be remembered that the flags presented to the Regiment before leaving home, were lost in the unsuccessful charge at Vicksburg, May 22d, 1863.

LT.General Pemberton reported that a total of Five flags were captured during the siege.

Have a good morning,
