Re: Union Flag Taken at McMiunville

I concur the flag was recaptured. Wheeler's Sequatchie Valley Raid was between October 1st-9th, 1863. Wheeler and Wharton left Harrison, Tennessee and both went over or between a valley on Walden's Ridge, from there, Wheeler with Martin's cavalry took a long left and Wharton went straight and both converged on McMinnville first and then to Woodbury thence to Murfreesboro then they followed the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad back down South to Wartrace then West to Shelbyville, Farmville and then Cornersville. Wheeler had 4,000 Cavalry and a battery of Six pieces of artillery. Some of General Forrest's cavalry also joined in as well (Forrest was on leave with his wife). Wheeler destroyed around "1,000 wagons that had been disabled or burned and upwards to 4,000 horses and mules that laid dead in their traces."

That battle was at "Anderson's Crossroads" and the infantry command of several hundred routed ( I don't know what Union regiment or regiments were there). Wharton's cavalry attacked McMinnville, the 600 man 4th Tennessee Infantry (USA) surrendered. Major Patterson commanding. Wharton was about to surround the 4th Tenn Infantry and they surrendered in about two minutes with not much of a fight.

General George Crook's cavalry division caught up with Wheeler and Wharton. Davidson's Cavalry division was cut up pretty bad. So if the 4th Tenn's flag was recaptured, it might have been captured by Crook's cavalry division. Certainly Davidson's cavalry was hit very hard.

Just a thought, but is plausible.

Have a good afternoon!
