Re: 2nd Mississippi Letter & Flag

Gregg,

Have you ever come across the photo at the link below:

http://dmc.tamu-commerce.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/HCHC&CISOPTR=5&CISOBOX=1&REC=1

It depicts a 2nd Mississippi set of colors that looks remarkedly similar to the "Hatcher's Run" flag that is part of the MDAH collection. However, to me it appears the battle honors and unit designation have been somehow "chalked" in to show up in the photo. For example, there was no "James Farm" battle as shown in the left quadrant...it was "Gaines Farm." Also, the unit designation surrounded the top and bottom of the middle star and was not split between the top and bottom quadrant as shown in the photo. In other respects, the flag looks similar in shape and condition to the Hatcher's Run colors. To me, the person bearing the flag in the photo looks to be Nathanial Bynum, the last color bearer for the regiment. The photo description notes the seated person as Dr. William I. Gibson, who served in Company A of the regiment...although I have him listed as William J. from the compiled service records. There are a couple of group photos in the MDAH collection that depicts the Hatcher's Run colors, and in those photos, the battle honors and unit designation are almost invisible due to the blue coloring used.

Any comments or thoughts? Just curious...

Thanks!

Mike
