Hello,

In many cases - but not always - the Color Company was Company C of the regiment. There were other companies that were also the color company during the war.

To elaborate on the previous post - the Confederates, using Hardee's drill manual (modeled after the French manual of the 1840's and reflecting changes in Scott's manual) used only one flag. With the coming of the war, the US Army, using Casey's manual (Hardee's rewritten) used two colors - the National and a regimental color.

This is a much better system that Prussian regiments of the 1700's or British regiments of the same time frame (but earlier in the century) using up to ten colors in battle!
