Re: 100th Ohio & 8th Tenn. Flags Captured

Shawn,

From the booklet "New Hampshire's Hall of Flags", an article by William Marvel, title "The Hall of Flags": "The 2nd New Hampshire, which enlisted for the more usual three-year term, had already departed the state by then [May 1861] and had seen its first battle, at Bull Run Creek in Virginia. The 2nd regiment had also made the acquaintance of the Sons of New Hampshire in New York, who likewise bestowed a national banner on that unit which it carried in that first fight and through most of the conflict, taking it into the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg."

A committee in San Francisco had a fancy-but-heavy banner made for the 1st NH, but it was disbanded before the flag arrived. They were asked about giving it to the 4th NH, but declined. "The 2nd regiment had seen hard service and participated in the fight at Bull Run, with honor to themselves, they were deserving the flag as a momento [sic] from their California brothers. The 2nd New Hampshire therefore won the prize, but the excellent condition of the color indicates it never saw the field. In fact, it may never have left the state."

The 2nd New Hampshire regimental states nothing about losing one of its flags at Bull Run.
