Re: 100th Ohio & 8th Tenn. Flags Captured

Thank you, Charles! I have not been able to get on here. We are in Germany currently, delayed on the next flight to Saudi Arabia. From there we shall catch a helicopter ride to Baghdad, Iraq and see what my wife is working on (construction project).

My oldest son is enjoying the beer here in Germany, calling his friends letting them know that he can buy and walk around with a beer in his hand on the streets. I remember wayyyyy back in the days, when I was 18 and first stationed in Germany. I could not believe you can just walk into a bar and pay for a canned beer and walk out and down the street and nobody said a word. I told my oldest son, Robert to enjoy the beverage because that will be the last one while we are here.

I hope you get these messages, my laptop is acting up.

One last thing, I believe now, that at 1st Bull Run, the 2nd New Hampshire might have lost a flag to Maj. Wheat's Tigers. No proof yet, but maps show the 2nd NH attacking, Maj. Wheat's men and the 2nd NH was repulsed. Wheat's LA Battalion actually had 900 men.

I would not be surprised if the 5th Maine (Howard's brigade) lost a flag/flags. Around 200-250 men were captured from the 5th Maine. Not many of the Union regiments showed up on the battlefield with all of their men. The long hot, dusty march shed stragglers from all Union regiments.

I have the 13th Virginia Cavalry losing a flag or many guidons at Hanover, Pennsylvania (Pennsylvania Campaign). The 2nd North Carolina was "cut to pieces" as well. The 5th New York Cavalry captured the 13th Va Cav's flag. (Page 93, "Plenty of Blame to go around). By Eric Wittenberg and J. David Petruzzi.

I also believe the 2nd NC Cav captured something from the 18th PA Cav (Routed). The 1st Delaware Cav, might have lost two guidons, defending Westminster, Maryland. 18th PA Cav, company "E" was captured, guidon must have been captured.

General Jeb. Stuart reported "Several Flags and one piece of artillery without a carriage were captured at Westminster". The 1st Delaware cav had two companies at the town. Most were captured.

I am sure Custer's men lost a few guidon's fighting in the Pennsylvania Campaign (before the Gettysburg fight).

Well have a good day/night,

Shawn Prouty
