The Arms & Equipment in the Civil War Message Board

Thanks again George, it sounds like they used any "spring vehicle" they could find, and maybe even modified some of them for the specific use as an ambulance. l can imagine that the north's wagons broke down as often as did their Confederate counter parts. But the north's manufacturing capabilities were able to keep their armies in the field well supplied with new ambulances, and with the advantage of their superior numbers of men, they could have repaired the broken ones and returned them to service quickly. I did find this:
"Toward the end of the war, the entire transportation system of the Confederacy, including
their ambulance organization, collapsed for want of the necessary equipment and supplies." I found this by searching "confererate ambulances" on Google, under "Civil War Medicine"
I have an old spring buggy, that I am rebuilding. I wanted to turn it into an ambulance for some re-enactor friends to use as a confederate ambulance, but the way it looks I won't have a lot of extra work to do to make it authentic, since there was no real plans for the construction.
Thanks again, Tom
