I wrote an article on the Battle Shirt of Missiouri worn by the guerrilla forces of that state. It was published in The Western Campaigner about thirty years ago. Here is a short description of this guerrilla shirt, It was adapted from a plains hunting over-shirt of the area. It was worn over another shirt and used to carry small game like pheasants, squirrels, rabbits and any other small game of the region. It was made of sturdy materials. The over-shirt usually had four large pockets, two in the chest area and two larger ones on the sides lower down. The shirt had no collar, but did have large sweeping V neck. The guerrillas made this shirt their own by customizing to their taste. These shirts were usually made by their wives, mothers, sisters or loved one. These shirts usually had alot of fancy needle work done to the v neck and the tops of pockets. Many had a rosette sewn at the bottom of the v neck and some were decorated with beads, buttons and small fresh water shells. These guerrilla fighters were known to carry a large number of pistols. These pockets served to carry ammo, extra loaded pistol cylinders and even extra pistols. Known pictures of these guerrilla band members show a wide variety of these battle shirts. For disguise they offen wore union blue coat over the guerrilla shirt or with no guerilla shirt.
