Battle Shirt?

I found a picture that is described as "Original Louisiana Crescent Regiment Sergeant's Battle Shirt." Here is a link to the picture I have put on my website.

"http://home.comcast.net/~crescentregiment/site/?/page/Battle_Shirt%3F/&PHPSESSID=24ac11bbe95ac860c472d2c34216610d" (please cut and paste, the link doesn't seem to want to take in this post)

I don't know much about uniforms but it seems a very strange shirt compared to anything I've seen before. It was in the collection of Randy Steffen, an artist who was known for detailed research. Is there such a thing as a "Battle Shirt?" Shouldn't there have been chevrons if this belonged to a sergeant? Is the collar unusual for a civil war uniform?

I think the original 8 cos. of the Crescent were furnished with identical frock coats (while in the state militia) which were replaced with standard shell jackets soon after leaving New Orleans. After the war a new Crescent Regiment was formed in the state militia which participated in many drill competitions across the country. Could this have been a post war dress parade uniform of some kind?

Any advice appreciated.
