Re: Confederate Sharpshooters Rifles

Actually the Enfield was the preferred CS sharpshooter weapon in the ANV. It was picked over the M-1841, Austrian Lorenz and Springfield. Two particular favorites were the Enfield P-56 and P58 two band rifles. Whitworths were used but usually two to a company in the ANV. They were expensive and hard to get even back then. There are several good books that tell about the Sharpshooters. They are "Lee's Sharpshooters; in the Forefront of Battle", "Shock Troops of the Confederacy" and one by Barry Benson (I don't have it and the name escapes me). The Confederate Sharpshooters were organized in battalion strength and are credited with keeping the South winning battles in 63 thru 65.
