term of three years, from this 13th day of June, 1862.
T. A. CUDE, Mustering Officer.
Date: July 1, 1862. Station: Fort Hindman.

The 26th was organized at White Sulphur Springs in the summer of 1862. Late summer to early fall 1862 was spent on outpost duty along the White River (the reference to Fort Hindman near DeVall’s Bluff, and the stay at Camp Hope/Camp Nelson, which served as sort of a forward base camp for the units manning the White River line).

Mr. Ashcraft's information is incorrect, and I'm not sure what he means by "records reconstructed by the unit's officers", but I suspect that he misread the original records, or jumped to an unwarranted conclusion. I have the transcribed microfilm records of the regiment, including the "Record of Events" written by the officers at the time. The 26th Arkansas was organized as a battalion at Camp Hindman, eight miles west of Little Rock, on June 7, 1862. They then marched ten miles to Camp Pike, on the north bank of the Arkansas River, opposite Little Rock, on June 11; then moved a little ways up river to Camp Pike No. 2 on June 13; then marched to Fort Hindman at Devall’s Bluff on the White River on June 18. This was not the more famous Fort Hindman at Arkansas Post. The 26th Arkansas remained at the original Fort Hindman at Devall’s Bluff until July 6, 1862, when they marched to Bayou Metoe, then back to Little Rock.
