In Response To: 1st (Union) Cavalry---Howerton ()

Hey Mark,

In my opinion, the "two" men named George W. High are one and the same. When he was recruited for Company G, he didn't immediately join the regiment -- he was absent sick at home for a few months. In the meantime, back home he seems to have been recruited somehow for Company I. When he returned to duty in Company G, he was reported as a deserter by Company I, because he never showed up to be mustered into service with that company, ever though he was present for duty in Company G.

Also, there is no other G. W. High anywhere in the surrounding counties in the 1860 census.

By the way, the Find-a-Grave website gives his full name as George Washington High.
