"And now for the rest of the story," as Paul Harvey used to say. The Yankees made a foray into Marion County in the winter of 1862 and captured the troops working the saltpetre cave. They were eventually paroled and ended up in Vicksburg just before the siege, and were captured there when the city fell. The Yankee parole officers identified them as "nitre guards".
