Re: Matlock's Bacon

I took a look at "The March to the River" last night and the book describes the capture of 2000 lbs of buried bacon on July 3 at Augusta. According to the book, blacks in the area that had been freed by federal forces led them to a new grave that had a head board and a foot board but no name. When they dug it up they discovered the 2000lbs of Bacon. The freed slaves indicated that a force of 400 Confederates had fled the area following a skirmish at one of the barricades the day before (July 2). That would marry up with General Rust's report that the enemy had captured Matlock’s Bacon.

"One of [Charles H.] Matlocks men that Belonged to the army east & was wounded in Battle of Shiloh & Being on Furlough I ordered him to Join Matlock, he was present when Matlock was stampeded This man says it was an extremely disgraceful Occurrence. Jarkins the man Refered to says the enemys have Recrossed with matlocks Bacon - 1000 lbs a number of horses & guns which Matlock left This man is reliable."
