On July 5, General Rust send a telegram to General Hindman with a message that had been intercepted between Curtis and Halleck. Curtis was describing his difficulties and indicated that he might have to fight his way through to Helena.

At the end of this telegram, Rust describeds information that he has recieved about Matlock's unit being Stampeded:

"One of [Charles H.] Matlocks men that Belonged to the army east & was wounded in Battle of Shiloh & Being on Furlough I ordered him to Join Matlock, he was present when Matlock was stampeded This man says it was an extremely disgraceful Occurrence. Jarkins the man Refered to says the enemys have Recrossed with matlocks Bacon - 1000 lbs a number of horses & guns which Matlock left This man is reliable."
