I agree that this probably came from "some half-legible original document". My supposition is that that document is the source for both "Meyer" and for "Magee" (in Confederate Records). There's no evidence I can find of a battalion with a name remotely close. I've pondered what the name might have actually been -- Mayes? And I've pondered whether this battalion was actually Bryan's. As far fetched as this may seem, I'm wondering if the 'half-legible' name was some form of 'Joel Bryan Mayes' or his cousin 'Joel Mayes Bryan'. The only other 'contemplated' battalion I can think of might be the Neutral Lands (where some Cherokee McGhee's lived) or those who were at Wilson's Creek, claimed to be led by Joel B. Mayes. Without seeing the original document, this is wild supposition.
