John L. Leggett, John W. Leggett and Francis M. Leggett all enlisted together in (old) Co. C, 8th Arkansas Regiment Infantry, at Jacksonport, Arkansas, on July 12, 1861. Francis M. Leggett was discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability at Corinth, Mississippi, on April 15, 1862. John L. Leggett and John W. Leggett were transferred to (new) Co. D when the regiment was reorganized on April 18, 1862. John L. Leggett was discharged as a non-conscript (age 17) at Camp Priceville, Mississippi, on July 25, 1862. John W. Leggett continued on in the 8th Arkansas.

John L. Leggett and Francis M. Leggett subsequently enlisted together in Co. B, 10th Missouri Regiment Cavalry, at a camp on Little Red River in White County, Arkansas, on February 28, 1863. Both men were reported as present for duty on the February 29, 1864, muster roll. There is no further record of John L. Leggett. Francis M. Leggett was paroled at Shreveport, Louisiana, on June 7, 1865. He stated that he was a resident of White County, Arkansas.

John L. Leggett died in 1902. His widow, Elizabeth Martin Leggett, applied for a Confederate pension from Woodruff County in 1905 (Pension No. 11309).
