The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

I'm sure that Marion O'Bar died at Camden. The 33rd Arkansas had been sent down to Louisiana with its brigade to harass U.S. interests (such as Federally-confiscated plantations, etc.) and generally raise havoc along the west bank of the Mississippi River to take some pressure off of Vicksburg. It was a quixotic adventure that produced little good; instead, the Confederate troops encountered disease along the rivers and bayous of Louisiana. Most of the sick were sent to hospitals at Monroe, Louisiana. When the troops pulled back to Arkansas, they took most of the sick with them and sent them to hospitals at Camden.

As far as I know, there are no surviving records from those hospitals -- at least, none that I've ever been able to find. Also, most of those who died were interred in graves marked with wooden markers, which soon disintegrated.

The only good thing about this whole episode is that, being sent to Louisiana, the 27th, 33rd and 38th Arkansas Regiments missed out on the disastrous attack on Helena on July 4, 1863.

I would like to see a photocopy of the letter. If you'll contact me at brhowerton@yahoo.com, I'll send you a mailing address.
