Re: Question for Danny
In Response To: Question for Danny ()

Damon,
I have pestered Bryan Howerton over the years seeking clarification and details regarding Dockery's brigade of exchanged prisoners, the 3 consolidated Arkansas regiments and the 40 series Arkansas regiments..

As best as I can tell from notes of my research and correspondence with Bryan, the 1st-2nd & 3rd Consolidated Arkansas regiments were not so denominated until after the spring 1864 campaigns; probably in September of 1864. Until then, the Dockery brigade portion of these consolidated units served under their original regimental designations.

During the spring 64 campaigns, Dockery's command is referred to cavalry and mounted infantry. They were in many of the spring 64 battles and skirmishes in the Arkansas segment of the Spring 64 campaign. I don't have any notes of involvement by the other exchanged Arkansas units.

Most of my information comes from the Official Records, except where otherwise noted: [and remember, some of these extracts from the OR's have been liberally paraphrased simply to suit my own individual purposes. The full passages should be easy to discover.

3/18/64 Steele to Grant-Pine Bluff is now threatened by a considerable force, 1,500 of Dockery's Bgde, which are Vicksburg and Port Hudson paroled prisoners.

The expedition to Mount Elba began on March 27, 1864 when the Federal forces under Colonel Powell Clayton left the post at Pine Bluff on its mission to attack the Confederate forces commanded by Brigadier General Thomas P. Dockery camped at Monticello. The battle of Mount Elba was fought on March 30,1864.

3/31/64-a copy of telegram from [Union] Col Clayton, at Pine Bluff, dated March 31, 1864, to Major Green, assistant adjutant-Gen:
The expedition to Mount Elba and Long View has just returned. We destroyed the pontoon bridge at Long View; burned a train of thirty-five wagons loaded with camp and garrison equipage, ammunition, quartermaster's stores, &c.; captured 320 prisoners; engaged in battle at Mount Elba yesterday morning Gen Dockery's Div of about 1,200 men from Monticello; routed him and pursued him 10 miles, with a loss on his side of over 100 men killed and wounded; captured a large quantity of small-arms, 2 stand of colors, many wagons, and over 300 horses and mules. Our loss will not exceed 15 in killed, wounded, and missing. The expedition was a complete success, details of which will be furnished in my official report,* which will be forwarded in a few days.

Battle of Prairie De Ann
April 10 - 13, 1864
The culmination of the Camden, Ar. and the Red River, La. campaigns was to capture Texas. Two Union armies were to join at Shreveport and move West. Gen. Steele was defeated in Ar. and Gen. Banks in La. The wounded from the Battle of Prairie De Ann were brought into Washington, Ar. where homes, churches, and business were filled. Seventy-four Confederate dead are buried here, known only to God.

Lest we forget.
