The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Reporting for Duty

Hey, Anthony. The 3rd Arkansas roster on the Gerdes site was my very first attempt at compiling, formatting and posting a document on the internet. I subsequently discovered that I had made some "cut and paste" errors, which are now stuck there.

My uncorrupted files here state that both men were still in service as late as August 31, 1863, after which they disappear from the record. As you may know, the otherwise comprehensive rolls of the 3rd Arkansas are missing for the crucial October 31 and December 31, 1863, reporting periods, when the regiment left the Army of Northern Virginia, accompanying Longstreet to support the Army of Tennessee. When the rolls resume (February 29, 1864), Hefley and Tillery and a whole bunch of other men are missing from the rolls. From pension applications and postwar accounts, most of those missing men are known to have been killed or mortally wounded at Chickamauga. My database lists Hefley and Tillery as "presumed KIA at Chickamauga." Unfortunately, my ham-handed cut and paste efforts mixed up my Gettysburg and Chickamauga notes. I go over my posts a lot more carefully since those days, but now that I'm in my senior years I may mess up from time to time.

Sorry for the confusion this caused.
