I agree with you that atrociousness is a state of mind. Yet, I know that not all men will force a woman's foot into a red hot pit of coals. Yes, I know there were more than one incidents of such as this one from Mrs. Howell and I will look into them as well. I've read some of the stories in the Confederate Women of Arkansas that had "torture" done to them but never mentioned what. Only this one of Mrs. Howell was by her daughter since Mrs. Howell died in 1867. I am going to look into it. I have to take the time to go through all the orders and correspondences, than I need to find the court martial books are for this region.
