I came across this years ago, just where I have no idea. Maybe someone else has seen or heard of this. Was the 13th Arkansas apart of the troops that over ran the Shiloh Church area? If so then there may be some truth to the following. Two men of the 13th came across some payroll money at or near the Church fight. They stuff a bunch of it in their haversacks and carried it around all day. Late in the day they got separated from their unit and as darkness came on, they got scared they might get captured by the yanks. Having the money on them and captured they might face a firing squad. So in the darkness they hid the haversacks under a pile of brush and were going to come back at daylight and get the money. They finally found their unit some time that night. Well we all know all the ground gained the first day at Shiloh was lost the second day. So these two men of the 13th Arkansas Inf never got back to their hidden haversacks and the money. Has anyone ever read or heard of this?
