You may have seen this, Bryan, but just in case...McRae wrote the following in an untitled document in the McRae papers that starts "See what Arkansas had to war with." Doesn't really add anything but thought you might want to see it:

We gather from “Official Reports” what the Arkansas men felt and what Jeff Davis thought and did for Arkansas. He knew nothing of the state’s needs and sent some men here who had no interest whatever in the state or men. This caused dissatisfaction. He says “I have been warned against a feeling which is said to exist in favor of a separate organization on the part of the states west of the Mississippi. Men think they can make better terms for themselves. Already I am told that dissatisfaction exists in Arkansas.” Was it any wonder after you have read N.B. Pears’ letter in regard to equipments &c.
