Re: desertions caused by "dispute"

The dispute I was referring to caused five men of Company H to desert from Camp Rust on 12 Jul 1862. They all returned, but ended up under arrest until they received exoneration, and all returned to duty. The mass desertion referred to by Col Nelson was that by Company K from Camp Rust on 29 Jul 1862. I believe this desertion was caused by dissatisfaction over officers, or probably the lack thereof. This company had no captain until William A. Bull transferred from Company B on 15 Aug 1862, and his captaincy was an appointment. The two lieutenants referred to by Nelson had to have been 1st Lt. J.W.M. Murphy and 2nd Lt. J.L. Prescott. These were the only lieutenants in Company K on 29 Jul 1862. Murphy was reduced to ranks on 10 Aug 1862 following the chaos caused by the desertion, and he ended up as ward-master in the regimental hospital. Prescott’s fate remains unknown.

BTW, does anyone know anything about Major Platosz? He was eventually assigned as drill-master, but I can’t find anything else about him. From other records, it comes out that his first initial was O.
