Re: desertions caused by "dispute"

Capt. James P. Stanley commanded Co. E before being promoted to major. The commander of Co. H was Capt. John H. May, who seems to have been in hot water from time to time.

I guess you've seen this extract from the correspondence of Maj. Gen. Thomas C. Hindman [O.R., Vol, 13, Chapter XXV, Page 38] --

At length, Col. A. (Allison) Nelson discovered and reported to me a wide-spread conspiracy to disband and go home. He ascertained that there was a regular organization for this purpose, and that a badge was adopted by the members for distinguishing each other. Within a few hours after this discovery a signal-gun was fired in the camp of an Arkansas regiment, and 60 men, headed by two lieutenants, deliberately marched away, with their arms and accouterments. Orders to arrest them were not executed.

This seems to suggest that the "dispute" was not confined to Co. H, 26th Arkansas; however that company was the only one which actually tried to disband and go home.
