My kin are all from Stone County and that sounds like just an old rock fence found all over the area. FOr fortifications, there would have been more effort put into it to include more dirt and less rock. FOr a battle about to happen, they would not have put that much effort into "cut" stone but just piled up whatever they could quickly throw together. When dealing with marauders there were no set battles but usually running battles and no fortifications would have been messed with. So from what you describe, it sounds just like the numerous rock fences built by hardy moutnain pioneers for generations on the rugged and steep hillsides, found in many places that are quite confusing but the landscape they farmed and worked were much diffent back then.
