In Response To: 24th Ark Infantry flag? ()

My ancestor served with the 24th Ark.-Hardys regiment and my own research has not uncovered a mention of what pattern of flag it carried. My own belief is that it probably carried a version of the first national flag at Arkansas Post (discussion with Doyle Taylor in 2003) which was lost at that engagement but I don't think we know. It is Doyle's belief that the reg. was not re-issued a flag until August 1863. Not all of the regiment(known as "Portlocks") was at Arkansas Post only about 200 men. The rest were stationed at St. Charles to guard the heavy guns-Is it possible that the colors remained there? In Aug. 1863 the 24th was attached to Frost's Missouri brigade and my question to Doyle was would the regiment have carried that flag as a regimental? That flag was a white cross on a blue field with a red border. I believe that the regiment carried the third national in the Red River campaign and clearly carried somthing as Hardy mentions leaving his color company behind as he sent his regiment forward at Jenkins Ferry. Again, I have no evidence as to what flag was carried when by this regiment-I've often wondered if any more details might be gleaned about the 24th-Hardy's from the Lt. Farr letters at the Butler center, I wrote them a few years ago and they responded that the letters had not been transcirbed. Sorry- a really long winded response to say we don't know.
