Tom, I have a framed photograph of Colonel Manning hanging on the wall above my desk. He is one of my heroes. There is an account in a diary of an Alabama officer who was with Manning at one of the various prisons he was in. The Yankees had just offered to release any Confederate officer who would take the oath of allegiance, then retired from the room to let the prisoners discuss it. The diarist recorded that Colonel Manning leapt up onto a chair and delivered a stirring and impassioned address about staying loyal to the Cause. If I can find that account, I'll post it. It's vintage Manning.
