What really stands out about this tidbit (aside from the Railroad configuration of Richmond to Mobile via Corinth, MS), is the people in Mobile realizing that Virginia is of recent date a foreign country. It really got my attention. That generation was surely cursed with the (supposed) ancient Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times."
