The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Hospitals in Richmond late 1864

John: I have not done a complete analysis, but I identified 8 men in the 14th Alabama who were captured in hospitals in Richmond on April 3, 1865. Some were sent to Jackson Hospital in Richmond, others were sent to Libby Prison or Newport News, Virginia, and at least three were sent to Point Lookout, Maryland and then to Fort Monroe. The earliest these men were paroled was April 18th, 23rd, and 27th. Based upon a review of their records, my assessment of the men of the 14th Alabama who were captured in hospitals in Richmond in April 1865 is that they were treated similarly to the men who were captured during the retreat toward Appomattox - They were treated as prisoners of war until they were paroled (Some were kept in hospital; however, due to their condition). I have not found any specific lists from late in the war like the ones you are looking for, but I have found rosters of patients and entries in prescription books at the National Archives.
