Hayes Lowe
7th Ala. Cav.

There were at least two, and possibly three, different regiments called the 7th Alabama Cav. The following information is based on the latest research for my book about Pickens Co. Civil War soldiers.

In the 7th Alabama Cav. on which I have information, Co. I was formed primarily of men from Pickens Co. This company is mistakenly attributed as Company G in some accounts. I have yet to figure out why this mistake would have occurred. This 7th Alabama Cavalry Regiment was organized at Newbern, in Greene County, Ala. on July 22, 1863, raised as part of the brigade of Gen. James H. Clanton. It became the 2nd Brigade in Maury’s Brigade. Many of the men in Co. I transferred in from Dupree's Independent Cavalry Company(in most cases without permission).

The first action that the 7th saw was an engagement at Nix’s farm, somewhere near Mobile and Pensacola, where it engaged the 14th NY Cavalry on April 2, 1864. The 7th lost fifteen killed or wounded, and eleven captured, including the Captain of Company B.

This regiment surrendered in Newbern, where it was first organized.

The other 7th Alabama Cavalry was formed when the 14th Alabama Cavalry Battalion Partisan Rangers was consolidated with the 19th Alabama Cavalry Battalion on April 15, 1863; and was designated the 7th Alabama Cavalry. This designation was then changed to the 9th Alabama Cavalry on September 5, 1864. The regiment surrendered in North Carolina. This group was part of General “Fighting” Joe Wheeler’s forces throughout the war. This regiment was recruited from the counties of Cherokee, DeKalb, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, and Morgan This other 7th surrendered as the 9th Alabama Cavalry in North Carolina.

The roster that I have has been assembled from many sources, other than the microfilm. I have yet to go through the microfilm, but I am aware that there are men on the microfilm that I don't yet have and men on my roll that are not on the microfilm. However, I don't have your man Toney listed in Co. I.
