i am seeking information on this regiment. i have an ancestor Joseph Blair Private who joined this regiment in Wesobulga, Ala. on May 3, 1862.Historical record roll was compiled by Gen Brewer 1866.This private was captured at Danville Ky, on Oct.15,1862 and died on Nov.12,1862 i have a reciept saying he was a prisoner of war recieved on board Steamer Metropolitan near Vicksburg Miss. Dec 4,1862.
and on this reciept it states he was dead.My question is: what happened to him when he was exchanged as a POW in Vicksburg? was his body sent to his home or was he buried in a common grave in Miss. somewhere? how do i go about finding out what was done with his body? we have a confilict about his burial place. one relative states he is buried in the family cemetary but a historian says the cemetary was not in existence at the time of his death. i really want to know what they did with dead prisoners at this exchange.thanks to anyone who can help me.
